Gold ACS Award NSW & ACT 2023 Dramatised Documentaries
Ron Iddles — The Good Cop was shot on my own Canon C500 with a Canon CN prime set — a compact, Super 35 package suited to the pace of dramatised-documentary work. I ran more of a one-man band on this production: handling lighting, grip and the jib and dolly setups myself, with a small crew that let us move quickly between the dramatic reconstructions of his career.
One memorable problem on the shoot was simply Ron's height. He's tall — and to capture face-level coverage as he walked forward, I'd hold a Ronin RS2 (relatively new gimbal technology at the time) above my head while walking backwards. The kind of physical compromise dramatised-doc work forces you into: there isn't always time for the perfect setup, but the audience never notices the contortions if the shot lands.
Working with John Mavety
John Mavety and I had a long working history before Ron Iddles — multiple series of Deadly Women for Discovery Channel, and two of John's short films (one of which placed third at Tropfest). John comes from a visual design background and has an eye for perfection, which kept me on my toes for the entire production. Working with a director who knows precisely what he wants, I appreciated that when scheduling would push you into quick setups that looked stale John would always push me to perform at my best and it paid off — the series went on to win a Silver Logie for Most Outstanding Factual or Documentary Program (2019) and an ACS Gold Award at the NSW & ACT chapter (2023).
